The trade-offs are real. Trail running outsoles use soft rubber that grips well but wears quickly, so expect 500–800km before the midsole and lugs fade, against 800–1,000km or more from a dedicated hiking shoe. Uppers are thinner mesh, which dries fast but offers less protection against rock and gorse. And some aggressive running outsoles are tuned to bite at speed, so test grip at walking pace before trusting a pair on steep wet ground.

For general UK walking from autumn to spring, where wet grass and mud are constant but full submersion is avoidable, a waterproof shoe keeps you comfortable most of the time and is the default recommendation. Grip and outsoles for chalk, wet limestone and mud
Rubber compound and lug geometry matter more than the brand name on the tongue. Softer, stickier compounds, including Vibram Megagrip and the softer Salomon Contagrip variants, hold noticeably better on wet rock but wear faster on tarmac and hard tracks. Harder compounds last longer and feel more secure on dry stone, at the cost of confidence in the wet. Cushioning, stiffness and underfoot protection
Midsole stack heights on walking shoes run from around 20mm to over 35mm, and that range changes how a shoe behaves more than most buyers expect. Higher stacks absorb impact on hard estate tracks, tarmac links and long descents, but raise the foot further from the ground, which reduces stability on cambered, rooty or rocky paths. Lower stacks give better feel and surer footing on technical ground at the cost of comfort over distance.
Stiffness and protection are separate from cushioning. A torsionally stiff midsole, sometimes with a thin rock plate, stops sharp stones bruising the sole of the foot on stony paths and scree, and reduces fatigue because the foot flexes less with every step. Below about £70, compromises stack up: harder, slicker rubber, membranes that can leak within a season, and uppers that crease and crack at the flex point. A cheap shoe that lasts 300km costs more per kilometre than a good one that lasts 900km. The reliable way to spend less is to buy last season's colourway of a well-reviewed model, which routinely discounts by 30–40% without any change to the shoe itself.
Fit and sizing: getting it right first time
Feet swell by up to half a size over a full day of walking, so fit walking shoes late in the day, wearing the socks you will actually walk in. You want roughly a thumb's width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe; on descents the foot slides forward, and a toe that touches the front in the shop will bruise on the first long downhill.
