What to look for in a hiking head torch

A head torch earns its place in the pack on the one day a year you finish later than planned, when a short winter afternoon runs out before you reach the car. It is one of the ten things worth carrying on any serious walk, and it belongs in the bag from autumn to spring even when you expect to be down by dark. Five things decide whether a head torch is right for you: how much light it puts out, the shape of that light, how it is powered, how long it lasts, and how well it copes with rain. Get those right for the walking you actually do and the rest is detail.

How many lumens do you actually need?

Lumens measure total light output, and more is not automatically better. For walking on paths, moving around camp and reading a map, 200 to 300 lumens is plenty and will feel bright. Step up to 400 lumens or more if you navigate off-path in the dark, walk in mist where you need to throw light further, or regularly finish winter routes after nightfall. Beyond about 500 lumens you are mostly buying reach you will rarely use, at the cost of runtime and a heavier unit.

The number on the box is the maximum, and a torch will not hold it for long. What matters is the brightness you will actually walk on, usually a middle setting, and how long the torch lasts there. A regulated torch holds a steady output and then drops off quickly when the battery is spent; an unregulated one dims gradually from the start, so it is dimmer sooner but warns you it is fading.

Why a cheap head torch claims more lumens than an expensive one

It is easy to find a two-pack of head torches on Amazon claiming 2000 lumens for under fifteen pounds, next to a branded torch quoting 1500 lumens for well over a hundred. The cheap one is not the bargain it looks. Reputable brands measure to the ANSI/PLATO FL1 standard: real light out of the front of the finished torch, with defined runtime, beam distance and water-resistance tests. Most budget sellers do not. Their headline number is usually the theoretical maximum of the raw LED chip from a datasheet, or a peak burst the torch holds for a few seconds before it overheats or the cheap battery sags. The two numbers are not the same unit, and the branded 1500 is very often brighter in the hand, and far more sustained, than the budget 2000.

The bigger difference is regulation. A good torch holds a steady output for hours; a cheap one blasts bright then nose-dives to a fraction within minutes, so that headline figure might last a minute or two. What the extra money actually buys is not lumens but honest specs, regulated output and real runtime, waterproofing that survives proper rain, performance in the cold, a comfortable balanced headband, and reliability the one time it truly matters, getting you off a hill in the dark. A torch that fails then is worse than no torch. And for hiking you do not need the big number anyway: 200 to 400 real lumens covers it. The lumen war is marketing.

How to read the reviews on a budget head torch

A cheap head torch can carry thousands of reviews and a 4.5-star average, which looks like a strong signal until you read who is leaving them and for what. Work through the positive reviews and a lot are people using the torch for dog walks on lit streets, jobs around the house or a rummage in the loft: undemanding tasks where almost any light is fine and a few bright minutes is all that is asked. That is a perfectly good torch for those jobs, and those buyers are happy for good reason.

The reviews that matter for hiking are the critical ones. Read the one-star reviews of a budget torch and the same themes repeat: build quality, waterproofing that lets go in real rain, and how fast the brightness or the battery fades, with more than a few reviewers warning outright that you should not trust it with your safety. Match the review to the use. A torch that is perfect for a lit dog walk is not automatically one to stake a dark hill descent on, and a high star average built on easy jobs tells you little about a hard one. Filter for reviewers doing what you actually intend to do.

So please do not stake your safety on an unreliable cheap brand. Spending a little more on a decent, reputable torch is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy, and on a dark night on the Jurassic Coast, with cliff edges and no street lights, a torch you can trust could be the difference between life and death. This is the one piece of kit not to cut the corner on.

Flood, spot or both: the beam matters more than the lumens

A flood beam is wide and even, and it is what you want most of the time: for the ground just ahead of your feet, for camp jobs and for close work like a map or a stove. A spot (or throw) beam is narrow and focused, and it reaches into the distance so you can pick out a path junction, a marker post or a stile across a field. Good hiking torches give you both, either as separate modes or as an adjustable beam, plus the ability to dim, which is the single most useful feature for saving battery and keeping your night vision.

Rechargeable or replaceable batteries?

USB-C rechargeable torches with a built-in lithium cell are convenient, cheaper to run and now the default. The catch is that lithium cells lose capacity in the cold, and when the cell is flat you cannot swap it: you need a power bank and time. Replaceable AAA torches let you carry spare batteries and change them in seconds, which is reassuring on multi-day trips, in deep cold, or anywhere far from a socket.

The most flexible designs are hybrids that take either a rechargeable pack or standard AAAs, so you get everyday convenience with an emergency fallback. Whichever you choose, treat spare power as part of the kit: a set of AAAs or a small power bank weighs almost nothing and is the difference between an inconvenience and a problem.

Runtime: check it at the brightness you will use

Manufacturers quote runtime, but often at the lowest setting, which flatters the figure. Look for the runtime at the middle or high brightness you would actually walk on, and make sure it comfortably covers your longest likely finish in the dark with margin to spare. In winter, assume the cold will shorten it. A torch that does 300 lumens for four regulated hours is more useful for hillwalking than one that claims 100 hours on a firefly setting you would never navigate by.

Water resistance: what the IPX rating means

The IPX rating tells you how the torch handles water. IPX4, resistant to splashing and rain from any direction, is the sensible minimum for UK hiking, where you will be caught in the wet sooner or later. IPX7, which survives brief submersion in a metre of water, is better still and worth having if you walk year-round or near water. Below IPX4, treat the torch as fair-weather only.

The features worth paying for

A red light mode preserves your night vision, does not dazzle companions, and sips battery, which is why it is standard on camping and navigation torches. Reactive or sensor lighting, pioneered by Petzl, uses a small sensor to brighten and dim automatically depending on what you are looking at, near ground or far path, which saves battery and stops you fiddling with modes. A lock mode stops the torch switching itself on and flattening the battery in your pack. Which head torch for which walker?

For casual and summer walking, a small, light torch around 200 to 300 lumens is all you need, carried as insurance for the day you run late.
