Does a women's cut actually matter?
For a fleece, yes, more than you might expect, and not for the reasons the marketing gives. A women's-cut fleece is not just a smaller men's one in a different colour. The good ones are shaped through the chest and waist, cut a little longer in the body so they stay put when you reach up, and sized so the sleeves are not swimming at the wrist. That matters more for a midlayer than for most kit, because a fleece that fits close traps warm air better and layers more cleanly under a shell. Where a proper women's version exists, it is usually worth choosing over the unisex or men's cut for exactly that reason.
The flip side: a few fleeces are effectively unisex, and some women prefer a men's cut for a roomier, longer fit. There is no rule. But where a proper women's version exists, I have listed it above.
