The Salomon Thernova Fleece Hoodie is one of those pieces that does not photograph as anything special and then turns out to be doing something quite clever. It looks like a soft, hooded fleece. Underneath, it is built on PrimaLoft, the same family of hollow-fibre synthetic insulation you find in warm jackets, worked into a garment thin and breathable enough to hike in. That combination puts it in a different category to a plush high-loft fleece, and it is the reason it is on my shortlist for a cold-active trip.
I am genuinely weighing this one up myself, specifically as a working midlayer for a Finland trip where I will be moving hard in real cold and then stopping, which is exactly the problem this garment is designed to solve. Who the Thernova is for
Active insulation is a specific answer to a specific problem, so this is not a fleece for everyone. It suits you if:
- You run hot on the climbs and then cool down fast when you stop, and you are tired of soaking a midlayer on the way up and shivering in it at the top
- You hike, run or ski-tour in cool-to-cold conditions and want one layer that breathes on the move and still holds warmth at rest
- You layer properly, and you want a technical midlayer under a shell rather than a cosy standalone jumper
It does not suit you if:
- You want the plushest, warmest fleece for standing still in the cold. Active insulation deliberately trades some peak static warmth for breathability, so a high-loft fleece like the ThruDark Phalanx will out-warm it when you are stationary
- You are shopping on price alone. At around £110 this is a premium midlayer, not a budget one

A note on how to read that table. The headline is not the fabric weight or a warmth rating, it is the word "active". PrimaLoft here is being used as an insulation you move in, not one you sit still in, and every other spec follows from that decision.
What PrimaLoft active insulation actually is
Most fleece traps warmth in a pile of standing fibres. Active insulation does something closer to what a synthetic jacket does, but in a form thin and air-permeable enough to wear while you work.
PrimaLoft is a synthetic insulation built from very fine hollow fibres. The hollow structure and the tiny air pockets between the fibres are what hold heat, which is where the warmth-to-weight comes from: you get a lot of trapped air for very little fabric weight. Because it is synthetic, it also keeps insulating when it is damp, which matters more than people expect in a midlayer, because a midlayer is the layer that catches your sweat.
The "active" part is the clever bit. Instead of packing the insulation dense to maximise still-air warmth, an active-insulation piece is deliberately built open enough to let air and water vapour pass through it. That means it breathes while you are generating heat and moisture, so you do not cook and soak on the climb, and then, the moment you stop and your output drops, the same lofted structure goes back to trapping warm air against you. It is insulation that is trying to hold a steady temperature across two very different states, rather than being brilliant at one and useless at the other.
That is the whole pitch, and it is a real one. It is also why comparing the Thernova to a plush fleece on warmth alone misses the point.
Warmth versus breathability
Every insulating layer sits somewhere on a line between "warmest when still" and "most breathable when working". You cannot max both, because the same dense, lofted structure that traps the most heat is the structure that stops air and moisture escaping.
A high-loft fleece plants itself at the warm-when-still end. It is glorious standing at a frosty viewpoint and it will overheat you on a hard climb. Active insulation like the Thernova deliberately sits further along towards breathability. On paper you give up a slice of peak static warmth, and in exchange you get a layer you can actually keep moving in without stripping it off every ten minutes.
So the honest framing of the Thernova's warmth is this: it is warm for how well it breathes, not warm in absolute terms against a chunky fleece. If your problem is "I am cold standing still and I never really get hot", buy loft. If your problem is "I get too hot climbing then too cold at the top", the Thernova's balance is the point of the whole exercise.
The stop-start problem it solves
This is the section that matters most, because it is the reason active insulation exists.
Picture a normal cold-weather hike. You start cold, so you put a warm midlayer on. Twenty minutes into the first climb you are pouring heat, the midlayer is soaked on the inside, and you either overheat or you stop and faff with layers. You reach the top, the wind hits, your output drops to nothing, and now you are wearing a wet layer that has stopped insulating. That swing, hot-and-working to cold-and-still, is where most layering systems fall apart.
Active insulation is built to smooth that swing out. On the climb it vents heat and moisture fast enough that you stay drier and do not have to keep stopping. When you stop, it lofts back up and holds warmth without you having to swap into a fresh dry layer. You spend more of the day at a comfortable temperature and less of it soaked or shivering.
This is exactly why I am looking at the Thernova for Finland. That trip is going to be long stretches of hard movement in serious cold followed by standing about, and the classic failure mode out there is sweating into your insulation and then freezing when you stop. Where it sits in a layering system
The Thernova is a midlayer, and it is happiest treated like one. Baselayer against the skin, Thernova over it as the insulating engine, shell over the top when the wind or rain arrives. Used that way it plays to its strengths: it breathes with the baselayer to move sweat off you, and the shell handles the wind it cannot.
It also works as a standalone layer on cold, calm, dry days, which is where the hood earns its place, adding a bit of warmth and wind shelter round the head when you have not got a shell on. The moment the wind gets up, though, treat it like any breathable insulation and put a shell over it, because air-permeable is exactly what you want on the climb and exactly what works against you in an exposed gale.
If you want the plush, standalone, standing-still warmth this is not trying to give you, that is the ThruDark Phalanx side of the fence: a Polartec High Loft fleece that is warmer at rest and worse on the move. Honest limits
Three things to be clear-eyed about before you spend.
First, it is not the warmest fleece you can buy, and it is not meant to be. If you buy the Thernova expecting the standing-still warmth of a high-loft piece, you will feel short-changed, because you have bought a tool for a different job. Judge it as active insulation or do not buy it.
Second, it is a premium price. Around £110 is real money for a midlayer, and there are warmer fleeces for standing about, and cheaper fleeces full stop, in the roundup. What you are paying for here is the specific active-insulation balance, not raw warmth per pound.
Third, be realistic about what active insulation is for. It shines when you are on the move and venting heat, but for standing still in deep cold, dedicated loft like a down jacket still wins. The Thernova is a working midlayer, not a belay jacket, so buy it for movement and add loft on top for the long cold stops.
Fit and sizing
Salomon lists the Thernova as a regular fit, so it should sit close without being athletic-tight, with room for a baselayer underneath. For a midlayer that is the right call: too slim and it crushes its own loft and will not layer, too baggy and it does not trap air.
If you are between sizes and you plan to run this under a trim shell, take your usual size rather than sizing up, so the shell still fits over the top without compressing the insulation. As always with a piece I have not handled, try it on if you can before committing.

The Salomon Thernova Fleece Hoodie is not trying to be the warmest or the cosiest fleece on the rack, and if you judge it on those terms it will lose. Judged on what it actually is, a PrimaLoft active-insulation midlayer built to hold a steady temperature across the hot-working and cold-standing halves of a hard day, it looks like a strong, thought-through piece of kit. The hollow-fibre warmth-to-weight, the breathability, the fact that it keeps working when damp, and the hood all point at the same use case: cool-to-cold active days where the real enemy is your own sweat.
It is high on my own Finland shortlist precisely because the stop-start swing in real cold is the thing that breaks ordinary layering, and this is built for exactly that.
