Gorge walking, ghyll scrambling and canyoning are the same activity wearing three different names. You put on a wetsuit and helmet, get into a fast mountain stream and work your way up or down it: scrambling over rock, wading through pools, sliding down natural chutes and jumping into deep water where it is safe to. The name usually depends on where you are. Wales and the Peak District call it gorge walking or gorge scrambling, the Lake District calls it ghyll scrambling, and canyoning tends to mean the more technical end where abseils, harnesses and bigger drops come into it.
It is one of the few outdoor days out where the terrain does the entertaining for you. You do not need to be a strong hiker or a confident swimmer. You need to be reasonably fit, happy to get cold and wet, and willing to trust your guide when they point at a pool and tell you to jump.
We list guided gorge walking and canyoning sessions through our partner Adventuro, who have around 108 UK trips across the two terms. You browse and filter the options above, then book directly with the provider. It costs you nothing extra, and we earn a small commission that keeps the site running.
What gorge walking and canyoning actually involve
At its simplest, a session is a guided journey along a river gorge. You move through the water rather than around it, so you spend the day scrambling up (or down) rock steps, wading against the current, swimming short sections of deep pool and sliding down water-smoothed rock. Almost every provider builds in optional jumps into plunge pools, and the good ones always offer a dry route round for anyone who would rather watch.
The activity suits a wide range of people. Families with children, stag and hen groups, corporate awaydays and hikers who fancy something different all end up doing the same thing. What separates a gentle family gorge walk from a full canyoning trip is the amount of technical rope work and the size of the drops.
Gorge walking versus canyoning
Gorge walking is the more accessible version. You are on your feet most of the time, jumps are modest (rarely more than about three metres), and there is little or no rope work. It is the right starting point for most people and most families.
Canyoning is the step up. Providers add abseils down waterfalls, bigger jumps, longer swims and rock flumes, and you will often wear a harness. It usually carries a higher minimum age and a slightly higher price. If a listing mentions abseiling or extreme, read it as canyoning even if the title says gorge walking.
Regional names and the best UK venues
The classic gorge walking and canyoning ground is in the mountains, so Wales and the Lake District lead, with the Peak District close behind and Dartmoor as the southern option.
Wales (Bannau Brycheiniog and Eryri)
Wales is the busiest area for guided gorge walking, and the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) is the heart of it. Waterfall Country around Ystradfellte and Pontneddfechan is the honeypot, with a run of waterfalls and pools ideal for scrambling, and most providers sit within half an hour of Cardiff or Swansea. Further north, Eryri (Snowdonia) has steeper, tighter gorges such as the Afon Ddu that lean towards proper canyoning.
Lake District (ghyll scrambling)
In the Lakes the activity is ghyll scrambling, ghyll (or gill) being the local word for a steep stream. Stickle Ghyll in Langdale and Church Beck above Coniston are the popular introductory routes. For something harder, the Esk Gorge in Eskdale is a full canyoning trip with swims and jumps of several metres.
Peak District
Derbyshire and the Peak District offer gorge scrambling on rivers around the Chatsworth and Matlock area. It is a strong choice if you are travelling from the Midlands or the north of England and do not want the drive to Wales or Cumbria.
Dartmoor (our nearest option)
As a Dorset-based site, Dartmoor is the closest gorge walking to us. The two commonly used sites are near Okehampton (handy for Exeter) and the Dewerstone near Plymouth and Tavistock, which has routes graded for different groups. It is a genuine adventure day within reach of the South West without a long haul north.
Safety, the kit provided and why a guide matters
This is not an activity to improvise. Rivers rise fast after rain, cold water saps your strength quicker than people expect, and the difference between a safe pool and a dangerous one is not obvious to an untrained eye. A qualified guide reads the water level on the day, chooses the route to match your group, sets up any ropes, and knows which jumps are safe and which are off limits when the flow is up. That local judgement is the whole point of booking a guided session rather than heading out yourself.
Providers supply the technical kit as standard: a wetsuit (usually 5mm), a helmet and a buoyancy aid, plus a harness and ropes on canyoning trips. Group sizes are capped and instructors hold water-based qualifications. When you compare listings, check the ratio of guides to guests and whether the price is per person or for a private group.
What to bring
The provider gives you the wetsuit, helmet and buoyancy aid, so your job is what goes underneath and what you put on afterwards. Bring:
- Swimwear to wear under the wetsuit, and a thin rash vest if you have one
- Footwear you can soak. Old trainers or sturdy water-friendly footwear with a decent grippy sole are ideal, as bare feet and flip-flops are not allowed on the rock. Some centres hire wetsuit boots, but do check, and if you are buying a pair to keep, a rugged water-friendly footwear option earns its keep. For the walk in and out, a pair of grippy walking shoes is worth having in the car.
- A towel and a full change of warm clothes for afterwards. You will be cold and wet, and getting dry quickly matters more than you think.
- A warm layer and a hot drink for the end of the session, especially outside high summer.
Leave watches, jewellery and anything that cannot get wet in the car. Phones and cameras stay behind unless the provider offers a waterproof option.
Difficulty, and whether it suits families and beginners
Most guided gorge walks are beginner-friendly by design. You do not need any prior experience, and the fitness required is moderate: if you can manage a hilly coastal walk, you can manage a gorge session. Guides pitch the day to the group in front of them, so a nervous first-timer and a confident teenager can do the same route at different intensities.
Family gorge walking is common, and many venues take children from around eight years old, subject to a minimum height on some sites. The bigger jumps and any abseiling are always optional, so a cautious child or adult is never forced. Full canyoning trips, with their larger drops and rope work, usually start at 16. Each Adventuro listing states its own minimum age, height and any weight limits, so read those before you book for a mixed-age group.
Gorge walking is one of several guided water adventures worth trying. If you like the sound of it, coasteering on the coast and guided wild swimming are natural companions.
